BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers (3-1) continued their hot stretch of play with a 5-3 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters (0-4) on Monday night at Centennial Field. The victory clinched the first series-win of the season for Connecticut. The Tigers will go for the sweep tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
Similar to game one of the series, the starting pitchers got off to solid starts. Both starters tossed three scoreless innings to open the ballgame.
The Tigers opened up the scoring in the fourth. Keaton Jones (1-4, RBI) singled through the left side to score Andres Sthormes (1-2, 2 BB).
The Lake Monsters countered in the bottom half of the inning, Eric Marinez doubled off the left field fence to drive in a run. The Lake Monsters tried to score Jhonny Rodriguez from first base but the relay throw from Jones to Sthormes cut down the potential lead run at the dish.
The Tigers carried that momentum into their next at-bats. After Cole Bauml walked (0-3, 2 BB, 2 R) and Josh Lester (1-4, R) singled, Joey Havrilak (2-4, 2 RBI) tripled down the right field line, scoring both baserunners, making it 3-1 Tigers. Blaise Salter quickly followed with a long Sac Fly to the warning track in left field to push the lead to 4-1.
Daniel Gonzalez (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for Connecticut. Gonzalez pitched 3.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 ER and struck out 6. Eduardo Jimenez (1) closed the game out with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Tigers are 3-0 when they score first this year. Connecticut also extended their win streak to three games.
