Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(Auburn, NY) - One night after breaking out the offense in a big way, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers found their bats silenced on Monday night at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY. The Scrappers offense was only able to bang out four hits in a 7-1 loss to the Auburn Doubledays. The Scrappers lone run coming on a Jodd Carter solo homerun.
The Scrappers were forced to play from behind right away when Auburn would jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Blake Perkins doubled to leftfield to start the inning. After moving to third on a fly out, Perkins would come in to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Ripken.
The Doubledays would then add on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with a little help from the Scrappers. Auburn would draw three walks in the inning, including a bases loaded walk by Oliver Ortiz. Two Scrappers errors would also contribute to the two run inning, putting the Doubledays up 3-0.
Carter's solo homerun with one out in the top of the fifth inning, his first of the season, would help Mahoning Valley avoid the shutout.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Doubledays would pull away for good with a four run outburst. Auburn would send all nine men to the plate in the inning. The big blow coming from Clayton Brandt with a two run single. Ortiz and Angelo LaBruna would each add an RBI single to push the Auburn lead out to the final score of 7-1.
Luis Jimenez (0-1) started and took the loss for Mahoning Valley. Jimenez worked three innings allowing three runs, only one earned, on just one hit. He walked four and struck out four. Yonathan Ramirez (1-0) started and earned the win for Auburn. He worked five innings of three hit baseball while allowing just one earned run. Ramirez did not walk a batter and struck out five.
The Scrappers (1-3) and Doubledays (3-1) will finish their three game series on Tuesday night with a 7:05 PM start. The Scrappers will send right-hander Ryan Colegate to the mound for his first start and appearance of the season. The Scrappers return home on Saturday, June 25th for Bo Pelini Bobblehead night and YSU night. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
