Special Teams Does It Again for the Albany Devils
December 5, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY -- The Albany Devils used two power-play goals to extend their winning streak to five games, defeating the Rochester Americans, 2-1, Saturday at Times Union Center. On the same night Mike Sislo set the franchise's all-time record with his 28th man-up tally, rookie Max Novak netted his first career goal.
Sislo passed Niclas Bergfors (2006-09) on the all-time list, scoring at 7:42 of the second period on a play setup by Paul Thompson and Matt Lorito. The goal, which was a wrist shot from the left circle, made it a 2-0 games and was the eventual game winner.
Novak opened the scoring 2:34 into the contest when he redirected Lorito's setup. The bid was denied, but Novak showed stellar hands, roofing the put back. Joseph Blandisi, who returned from a three-game absence with a lower-body injury, registered the second assist.
In the third, Rochester's Brady Austin spoiled Yann Danis' attempt for a fourth shutout when he found the back of the net at 1:29.
Albany's defense - as it has done countless times this season - shut the door the rest of the way and Danis finished the game with 10 stops in the third period and 23 for the game.
Special teams again played a major role for the Devils. The power play went 2-2, scoring its league-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season. On the flip side, the penalty kill went 4-4 and has allowed just one goal against during the team's winning streak.
Both the power play (27.4 percent) and the penalty kill (91.1 percent) rank first in the AHL.
Albany improves to 14-4-3-0, while Rochester goes to 10-11-1-0.
The Devils return to Times Union Center Sunday with a 5 pm game against the Syracuse Crunch. Albany will wear special Holiday Jerseys, which will be auctioned at a later date to benefit the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Albany Medical Center.
