Ontario Reign Game Preview: Reign Go Cross-Country Skating to Take on Checkers Today

Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), take on the Charlotte Checkers today at 4:00 p.m. PT at Bojangles' Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Today is the first of four meetings between the two teams this season.

Frequent Flier Miles:

The Reign travel to Charlotte for the first time in Ontario history and the Kings' AHL affiliate collides with the Checkers for the first time since the 2010-11 season when the Manchester Monarchs went 2-1-0-1 head-to-head.

Mersch Magic:

Forward Michael Mersch enters tonight's contest on a three-game road goal scoring streak with five tallies.

Century Mark for Dowd:

Forward Nic Dowd appears in his 100th professional contest tonight. Through 99 games, the Huntsville, Alabama, native has 10 goals and 47 assists for 57 points.

Grabbing The Lead:

The Reign are 9-0-0-0 when leading after one period and 10-0-0-0 after two periods while the Checkers are 5-0-0-0 after one period and 6-0-0-0 after two periods.

Upcoming Milestones:

Forward Sean Backman is two games away from 300 AHL contests and Head Coach Mike Stothers is eight wins away from 100 as a professional head coach.

Scouting the Checkers:

After opening the 2015-16 season with a 10-game road trip, professional hockey returns to Bojangles' Coliseum for the first time since 2005 after $16 million in renovations last summer. The Checkers previously occupied Time Warner Cable Arena in downtown Charlotte. Forward Derek Ryan leads the Checkers with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points and holds a team-high seven points on the power play (three goals, four assists).
