Sparks shuts out K-Wings
February 12, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
ORLANDO- The reigning ECHL goaltender of the week, Garret Sparks, made a case for him to keep the award for at least one more week. Sparks stopped all 42 shots he faced to help the Orlando Solar Bears to 4-0 shutout of the Kalamazoo Wings Thursday night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
Despite outshooting Orlando 13-6 in the first period, Kalamazoo fell behind in the opening 20 minutes. The Solar Bears struck for two goals in a span of 1:02. Denver Manderson (10th) put Orlando ahead 10:28 into the period by one-timing a John McInnis centering pass.
Moments later, Brett Findley redirected a Brock Montgomery slap shot just under the cross bar to increase the lead to two.
The K-Wings kept peppering Garret Sparks in the second period. Kalamazoo outshot Orlando 15-6 in the period, including 13-2 in the first 17 minutes of the stanza. Despite the shooting barrage, it wasn't the K-Wings that scored in the period.
Trying to get out of their own zone, the K-Wings coughed up the puck in front of their own net. Orlando's Marshall Everson was there with just 19.6 left in the period to knock in his ninth goal of the season.
Manderson (11th) tacked on his second of the night with an empty-netter to close out the scoring.
For the game, Kalamazoo out-shot Orlando 42-23.
The loss extended the K-Wings road winless streak to four games (0-2-1-1) and marked the third time this season the team was held scoreless.
Kalamazoo will continue a season-long five-game road swing tomorrow, Friday, February 13th with the fourth stop of the trip with a 7 p.m. encounter at the Germain Center against the Florida Everblades.
The K-Wings will return home on Wednesday, February 18th for a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Gwinnett Gladiators on Wacky Wednesday featuring 10-cent hot dogs.
Tickets for all K-Wings home games are currently on sale at Wings Stadium Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations, including www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745-3000.
