
South Bend Salvages One Game from Bees

Burlington, IA (May 22, 2009) - The Burlington Bees were unable to complete a three-game sweep of South Bend as they lost 4-2 Friday night. The Bees had base runners on in six of the nine innings but were 0-6 at the plate with runners on in scoring position.
South Bend took the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring one run. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Fernando Garcia singled with one out. Eric Hosmer then came to the plate and hit his second homerun of the season to give the Bees a 2-1 lead.
The Lead was short lived for the Bees as South Bend came back with three runs in the top of the seventh to take their 4-2 lead. The Bees went down in order in both the seventh and eighth innings but had two runners on in the bottom of the ninth when the game ended.
Manauris Baez got the start and allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings. He did not factor into the decision. Justin Garcia took the loss to move to 1-3 after allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Barry Bowden pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
The Bees had six hits in the game. Garcia and Jose Bonilla each had two. The Bees did commit four errors, which tied a season high.
The Bees open a Memorial Day weekend three-game series with Dayton on Saturday. Mike Montgomery is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
