CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels struck for six runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating the Great Lakes Loons 6-1 Friday night.
Loons' starter JonMichael Redding started and lasted just 1 1/3 innings, surrendering six hits and six runs (all earned). He surrendered three in the first and three in the second before giving way to reliever Steve Smith.
In 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief, Smith quieted the Kernels' bats, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
Anthony Hatch's double in the fifth scored Alfredo Silverio for the Loons' lone run.
The Loons begin a three-game Memorial Day weekend series in Clinton against the LumberKings Saturday night. Right-hander Ethan Martin (3-1, 2.57 ERA) will start for the Loons against right-hander Walter Suriel (0-4, 6.43). The game will be carried locally on ESPN 100.9-FM. Game time is 7:30pm ET from Alliant Energy Field.
