Kernels jump to early lead, cruise home with 6-1 win

May 22, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored three runs in the first two innings, en route to a 6-1 win over the Great Lakes Loons in front of 2,563 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The win improves the Kernels first half record to 21-20, good for fourth place in the MWL West and four games behind Kane County. Great Lakes falls to 22-18.
Beau Brooks led the Kernels, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and Alexi Amarista was 2 for 3 with a double, run scored and stolen base.
The Kernels roughed up Great Lakes starter JonMichael Redding (5-2) for six runs (all earned) on six hits over 1.1 innings. Kernels starter Tyler Chatwood (2-2) allowed a run on three hits and struck out two over six innings for the win. Kevin Nabors and Christian Scholl combined for three scoreless innings out of the Kernel bullpen.
Anthony Hatch drove in the only Great Lakes run on an RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Kernels now welcome the Lansing Lugnuts, the MWL affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium for three games starting Saturday, May 23rd. The Cedar Rapids Symphony-Orchestra Iowa will play a pre-game concert featuring the music of the Eagles, followed by the Kernels and Lugnuts at 6:35 pm and spectacular FIREWORKS after the game.
Tickets for Saturday's game are in VERY short supply - less than 50 remain as of Friday afternoon before SRO (standing room) tickets are sold. Please contact the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560 after 10 am for ticket availability. The current home stand continues through Monday, May 25th.
