South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Burlington, IA - Behind the strong pitching of starter Brett Moorhouse, the South Bend Silver Hawks snapped a six game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Burlington Bees on Friday night.
Moorhouse (WP, 2-4) went eight innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. The right-hander struck out four and walked one to earn his second win of the year. With the 8.0 innings, Moorhouse ties Wade Miley for the longest outing by a starter in 2009.
In a good starting pitcher's duel, South Bend plated the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning against Manauris Baez (ND). Nelson Gomez started it with a double to left and was at second one out later when Victor Estevez grounded down the third base line. The ball was gloved by third baseman Antonio Jimenez, but his throw was errant, allowing Gomez to score and Estevez to get to second.
Burlington took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run homer by Eric Hosmer. It was the second home run of the season for Hosmer, the first round draft pick (third overall) of the Royals in 2008.
South Bend bounced back immediately with a three run top of the seventh to retake the lead against reliever Justin Garcia (LP, 1-3). Isaias Asencio singled to the start the rally, going to second on a single by Victor Estevez. Reynaldo Navarro laid down a bunt to sacrifice the runners but beat it out for an infield single. The throw to first went down the first base line, and the error allowed Asencio to score to knot the game at 2-2.
A walk loaded the bases, and a double play groundout scored Estevez for a 3-2 lead. Justin Parker completed the scoring with a double to right-center, bringing in Navarro for the 4-2 advantage.
Justin Mace (SV, 3) came in to pitch the ninth and worked around two walks to earn his third save of the season.
The Silver Hawks continue the six game road trip with three games at Peoria beginning Saturday night with a 7:30 PM Eastern Time first pitch. South Bend gives the starting nod to LHP Taylor Sinclair (0-1, 4.22 ERA) while the Chiefs counter with RHP Marcus Hatley (3-1, 5.10 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
