Lugnuts Pull Away Late From 'Kings, 10-5

CLINTON, IA - Locked in a tight one-run game in the ninth, Mark Sobolewski provided a two-run double and Mike McDade followed with a two-run homer, sending the Lansing Lugnuts (14-24) to a third consecutive victory, 10-5 over the Clinton LumberKings (20-20) on Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field.

Lansing starting pitcher Josh Wells (2-4) earned the victory, striking out eight LumberKings while allowing two runs on three hits over five innings.

The Lugnuts trailed 2-1 entering the sixth inning but exploded for five runs against relievers Andres Esquibel (0-1) and Ryan Moorer. Yohermyn Chavez came through with an RBI single and baserunner Brian Van Kirk was awarded home as well on fielder obstruction, putting Lansing on top, 3-2. Later in the inning, McDade slugged an RBI double and A.J. Jimenez followed three batters later with a two-run triple for a 6-2 lead.

Clinton tallied three times in the home half of the sixth against Lugnuts reliever Jonas Cuotto to cut the score to 6-5 before Boomer Potts came out of the bullpen to strand two LumberKings on base.

Potts would proceed to hold the Kings scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing Lansing to pull away in the ninth.

The defeat was the LumberKings' seventh in a row.

Lansing collected 13 base hits in the game, three from shortstop Tyler Pastornicky.

The Lugnuts will go for the series sweep at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Friday night at Alliant Energy Field, Lansing right-hander Chase Lirette (0-0, 0.00) will head to the mound against right-hander Kenn Kasparek of Clinton.
