GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored three first-inning runs Friday night and never let up, beating the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 6-3, in front of 5,945 at Elfstrom Stadium to take two out of three in the series. Franklin Hernandez had three RBIs to lead the offense, and Pedro Figueroa pitched seven strong innings for his fourth win.

Hernandez belted a two-run double in the first off Cody Scarpetta (1-3) to make it 2-0 right away, and a Jeremy Barfield single put the Cougars ahead, 3-0. Then Dusty Coleman brought in a run in the second, and Juan Nunez singled home Barfield in the third for a 5-0 game. The Cougars' final run came in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez.

Figueroa (4-1) pitched seven innings and allowed three runs -- two in the fourth and one in the fifth. He scattered six hits, walked one and fanned five while retiring the final nine batters he faced. Justin Murray worked a scoreless eighth in his Cougars debut, and Mickey Storey logged a perfect ninth for his first save.

The Cougars (25-16), who extended their lead atop the Western Division to 2.5 games, continue their six-game home stand Saturday night at 6 CDT with the start of a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps (27-13), who are in first place in the Eastern Division. Matt Fitts (0-5, 5.97) will face Casey Crosby (2-0, 2.43).
