Sounds Stay Hot With 3-1 Win Over Sky Sox
June 22, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â Infielder Rob Mackowiak blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and Nashville's strong pitching continued with Dave Williams throwing six innings of one-hit, one-run ball as the Sounds took their sixth game in a row, defeating the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 3-1, on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.
After allowing a solo home run to the third batter of the game, Garrett Atkins, Williams (1-1) did not allow another hit the final 5 1/3 innings he was in the game. Relievers Mike Lincoln and Jim Mann each tossed 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth, respectively. Despite allowing a lead-off single to Ronnie Belliard in the top of the ninth, Sounds stopper Mark Corey retired the final three batters to record his Pacific Coast League-leading 22nd save of the season.
Up until the fourth inning, the Sounds offense had mustered only one hit, a J.J. Davis double in the second. However, in the fourth, Nashville was able to even the game. Dave Doster started the rally by sending a deep drive off the wall in right-center for a double. After advancing to third on a Rob Mackowiak ground out, Doster crossed home when Mike Gulan hit a smash through the middle of a drawn-in infield.
Mackowiak, who was playing first base in place of recent Pirates call-up Carlos Rivera, provided the difference-making runs in the last of the sixth. Tike Redman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Doster groundout before Mackowiak laced a 2-0 Aaron Cook delivery over the left-field wall for his first Triple-A longball of the season to give Nashville a lead it would not relinquish.
Mackowiak also starred in the field. In just his third appearance at the position in his eight-year professional career, Mackowiak made two sparkling defensive plays. He made a tumbling catch in foul territory on a pop up off the bat of Belliard in the top of the sixth frame and later made a nice pick of a low throw by shortstop Aaron Holbert to retire Kit Pellow in the seventh.
Catcher Blake Barthol made his 2003 debut when he came off the bench in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for the Sounds. He lined a Vic Darensbourg delivery up the middle for a single.
The teams meet again in Monday night's 7:00 p.m. tilt. The Sounds will turn to right-hander Matt Guerrier (2-5, 4-65) to continue their current win streak. He has one his last two outings. He will be opposed by Colorado Springs right-hander Jason Young (5-2, 3.29).
