Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Yamid Haad's bases-loaded single to right field scored pinch-runner Alex Fernandez with two out in the bottom of the ninth as the Portland Beavers blanked the Memphis Redbirds 1-0 at PGE Park Sunday afternoon in front of 5,816.

Jaret Wright, Brandon Villafuerte, Jose Silva and Courtney Duncan combined on the shutout for the Beavers (40-38), who broke a six-game losing streak to the Redbirds (29-47).

The teams combined for just nine hits in the game.

Tagg Bozied drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth and advanced all the way to third when Mark Quinn's groundball went through the legs of third baseman Scott Seabol for a two-base error. Gabe Molina then issued an intentional walk to Mario Valdez to load the bases with no outs.

It appeared the Redbirds might get out of trouble, though, as Ben Risinger popped up to short and Jermaine Clark lined out to short center - neither deep enough to score Fernandez from third. But Haad laced a single down the right-field line against Kevin Ohme for the game winner.

In his first start of the year, Wright struck out five and faced two batters over the minimum in four innings of work. Wright started Sunday in place of Ben Howard, who will have surgery Monday to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.

Villafuerte worked the fifth through the seventh, his longest outing of the year. Silva, who threw two inning in an abbreviated start Saturday night, and Courtney Duncan pitched an inning apiece to secure the shutout, the Beavers' seventh of the year.

Memphis starter Jason Ryan was sharp in seven innings on the hill, allowing just four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. Molina came on in the eighth and fell to 1-6 with the loss.

Duncan (2-4) broke a personal three-game losing streak by picking up his second win of the year.

It was the longest outing of the season for Wright, including 26 relief appearances with San Diego to start the year. Twice this season the right-hander has worked 2.2 innings - May 15 against Atlanta and again in his last appearance with the Beavers, June 16 at Albuquerque.

NOTES: Right-hander Ben Howard left the team Sunday on his left knee Monday in San Diego ... Dr. Jan Fronek, the Padres team physician, will perform the procedure that is expected to keep Howard out 4-6 weeks ... the Beavers are 11-6 in day games this year ... Villafuerte has yet to allow a run in 10.1 innings pitched since joining the Beavers earlier this month.
