Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Todd Dunwoody had three hits, including a two-run homer, helping the Memphis Redbirds to just their 10th road win of the year with a 3-2 victory over the Portland Beavers before 9,660 Saturday night at PGE Park.
Dunwoody's two-run home run off reliever Kevin Walker put the Redbirds (29-46) up 2-0 in the third. Dunwoody doubled in the first and singled and stole a base in the fifth.
John Gall added a mammoth solo shot off the scoreboard in left-center against Walker in the fourth with what wound up being the winning run.
Despite the win, the Redbirds are just 10-25 away from their home stadium, AutoZone Park. Portland, meanwhile, has lost four of their last five at home and has not won consecutive games in more than two weeks.
Memphis starter Clint Weibl was sharp through five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. Jermaine Clark led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from Tagg Bozied. The Beavers eventually loaded the bases and trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on a sacrifice fly to center by Alex Fernandez.
Bozied and Clark each had two hits for the Beavers (39-38).
Weibl (2-1) allowed five hits and four walks while striking out five for the win. Mike Crudale pitched the ninth for the save, his fourth of the year.
Walker, who took the loss after allowing all three runs in his two innings of work, came on in relief of starter Jose Silva after just two innings. Silva was ejected after exchanging words with home plate umpire Scott Letendre as he left the mound following the completion of the top of the second.
NOTES: Saturday's crowd was the second-largest of the season ... during the game, the Beavers held a contest to see how many helium balloons it would take to float a 32-pound, three-year-old boy ... money raised through the contest was donated to ALS research (Lou Gehrig's disease) .... it took 62 helium-filled balloons to float the youngster on the Fred Meyer Family Deck ... the Beavers also commemorated Gehrig's 100th birthday ... Beavers play-by-play broadcaster Rich Burk re-created Gehrig's famed farewell speech on the field before the game ... one week from Saturday, PGE Park will host the Les Schwab Bowl.
