Iowa Cubs News Release

After a two-run first inning, the Nashville Sounds (45-52) did not relinquish their lead as they went on to defeat the Iowa Cubs (44-53) 4-3 Tuesday night at Principal Park. The Cubs have now dropped two in a row to the Sounds.

Cubs' starter Nick Struck walked Nashville leadoff man Eric Farris, but looked poised to escape early trouble when he picked Farris off first base. However, Jordan Brown followed with a double to center and Brett Carroll drew a walk. Both men advanced 90-feet on a passed ball by Welington Castillo. Erick Almonte fanned for the second out and Struck issued his third free pass of the inning to Mat Gamel to load the bases. Taylor Green put the Sounds up 2-0 with a single to center field.

The Cubs got on the board when they loaded the bases in the fourth. DJ LeMahieu and Castillo were hit by pitches, and Brad Snyder singled on a ground ball to right field with one out. After a fly out, Marwin Gonzalez forced in a run when he was walked by Sounds' starter Mike Fiers.

In the sixth, Nashville pushed across another run as result of a walk. Struck put Almonte on base ahead of back-to-back singles by Gamel and Green. Almonte crossed home on the Green base hit.

Iowa responded in the home half of the sixth. Castillo hit a towering home run to left field which brought the Cubs to within one run at 3-2. It was Castillo's 13th homer of the season, which ties his career-high set in Iowa last year.

Blake Parker entered the game to relieve Struck to begin the seventh inning and quickly let up a double to Caleb Gindl. Fiers put down a sacrifice bunt and advanced Gindl to third base. After a walk to Farris, Brown drove in Gindl with an RBI-single to make the score 4-2.

Struck went on to take the loss (0-3). He completed six innings and allowed three runs on only four hits. He struck out one, but walked five Sounds' batters.

Nashville's tally in the seventh proved to be a big insurance run when Bryan LaHair powered his league-leading 28th home run out to right-center field in the eight inning. The blast once again brought the Cubs to within one run of Nashville, but the Sounds shut down Iowa and stranded the tying run at third base later in the frame.

Fiers (3-0) pitched seven strong innings for the Sounds in the win. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked five men and struck out four. Mike McClendon pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

The Cubs and Sounds play game three of this four-game set tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Jay Jackson (5-8, 5.89) is scheduled to take the hill for Iowa opposite Josh Butler (5-5, 4.80) for Nashville.
