ROSTER MOVES
The Texas Rangers acquired utility man Nick Green from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations and Zach Phillips, who was designated for assignment last week. Green, who has been assigned to Round Rock, had spent the entire season with Triple-A Norfolk of the International League. He hit .208 (64-for-308) with 10 home runs, 16 doubles and 46 RBI in 87 games with Norfolk. Green has seen action at second base, third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions this season. He has played 393 Major League games with Atlanta (2004), Tampa Bay (2005-2006), New York-AL (2006), Seattle (2007), Boston (2009), Los Angeles-NL (2010) and Toronto (2010). ¬Â¦ Neil Ramirez, who left Saturday's game at Memphis with shoulder stiffness, has been placed on the disabled list.
LAST NIGHT'S GAMES
Brad Nelson's 10th-inning solo homer gave the Express a 5-4 victory over New Orleans in the series opener. It was Round Rock's third walk-off homer this season. The Express trailed 4-2 before Matt Kata's eighth-inning, two-run homer. Nelson and Kata, who had back-to-back solo homers in the fifth inning, became the eighth and ninth Express players with multiple-homer games this season. Mark Hamburger earned the victory in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings on one hit with two strikeouts.
DIVISION STANDINGS UPDATE
Round Rock (57-39, .594) pushed its lead over Albuquerque (50-46, .521) in the American Southern Division to seven games last night. While the Express defeated New Orleans 5-4 in 10 innings, the Isotopes lost 8-7 at home against Oklahoma City. The Express are 20-8 since June 18; the Isotopes are 11-17 in that time. Round Rock's current seven-game lead matches their largest of the season, a spot in which they also stood following a 13-10 victory July 4 at Albuquerque. The Express have at least shared the division lead following 74 of 96 games this season and have led the division outright since June 25. New Orleans (46-50, .479) trails Round Rock by 11 games, while Oklahoma City (41-55, .427) is 16 games back. The Express are 18-14 against their division foes.
ROUND ROCK AMONG TOP PCL TEAMS
At 57-39 (.594), Round Rock owns the PCL's second-best record behind Reno (58-36, .617); the Aces have won seven straight. Furthermore, the Express are four games ahead of Omaha (53-43, .552) in the overall American Conference standings.
EXPRESS MATCH 2010 WIN TOTAL
Round Rock matched last season's win total with last night's victory; the 2010 Express - then the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros - posted their 57th and final victory Sept. 4 in the season's antepenultimate game. The Express have finished above .500 only twice since joining Triple-A in 2005. Round Rock won the American Southern Division title in 2006 with an 85-59 record and finished 74-70 in 2005. The Express did not reach 65 wins in any of the last four seasons, winning 61 games in 2007, 64 games in 2008 and 63 games in 2009.
ROUND ROCK vs. AMERICAN SOUTHERN DIVISION
The Express are 18-14 against American Southern Division teams this season. Round Rock has completed its season series against Oklahoma City, winning 10 of 16 meetings. The Express are 6-3 against New Orleans but have lost five of seven against Albuquerque. The Isotopes are 14-14 in division play, New Orleans is 13-12, and Oklahoma City is 16-21. This series is Round Rock's final series against a division opponent until New Orleans makes a return visit Aug. 20-23. The Express and Albuquerque meet nine times in the season's final 13 games - five times at Albuquerque and four times at The Dell Diamond.
NEW ORLEANS vs. AMERICAN SOUTHERN DIVISION
The Zephyrs are 13-12 against division opponents this season. New Orleans is 6-2 against Oklahoma City, 3-5 against Albuquerque and 3-6 against Round Rock.
NO REST FOR THE WEARY
Tonight's game continues a 29-game, 28-day stretch for the Express. With only one off-day between the All-Star break and the end of the regular season, Round Rock will play 54 games in 54 days. The Express are 5-1 during this stretch.
LATE-INNING HEROICS
Last night's game marked the eighth time this season the Express won when trailing after seven games and the eighth time they have won when tied after eight innings. The Express have won 16 games in their final at bat, including eight walk-off victories. Each of Round Rock's last three victories in its last at bat was by virtue of walk-off home runs. Doug Deeds accomplished the feat in the 12th inning July 2 against Nashville, and Mike Napoli provided a three-run, game-winning homer in the ninth inning the following night. Brad Nelson followed suit last night.
HOME SWEET HOME
After struggling at The Dell Diamond early in the season, the Express have been strong at home over the past month. Round Rock is 30-19 at home, winning 13 of 16 home games since June 18. The Express are tied with Albuquerque and Reno for the most home wins in the PCL. Round Rock's home winning percentage (.612) is third in the league behind Reno (30-15, .667) and Albuquerque (30-17, .638).
EXPRESS STRONG ON THE ROAD, AS WELL
Round Rock (27-20, .574) owns the best road record in the American Conference and the league's second-best road record behind only Sacramento (31-13, .705). The Express and Omaha (25-23, .521) are the only American Conference teams above .500 on the road; in fact, each of the other six American Conference teams are at least five games under .500 on the road. Round Rock is 4-4 in road series with three splits.
BIG-FLY GUYS
The Express enter tonight's game with 130 home runs on the season - five more than any other PCL team (Reno, 125). Albuquerque (117) and Nashville (105) are the only other American Conference teams with at least 100 home runs. Round Rock was the first PCL team to 100 home runs this season. The Express clubbed 47 homers over the last 28 games after being shutout in consecutive games.
EXPERSS ON RECORD HOMER PACE
Round Rock already has eclipsed the franchise's season home-run totals from 2009 (97) and 2010 (108). The Express hit 170 home runs in 2006, an average of 1.18 per game and still the club's Triple-A era (since 2005) record. The 2011 Express average 1.35 home runs per game and are on pace to hit 195 on the season. Since the Express joined the PCL in 2005, only one team has eclipsed 190 homers in a season - Albuquerque hit 197 in 2008. Tacoma led the PCL with 185 home runs last season despite finishing 15th out of 16 teams in the league in team batting average (.264).
OFFENSE STRUGGLES WITHOUT HOMERS
The Express have homered in 64 of 96 games this season, going 43-21 in those games. However, Round Rock is just 14-18 when failing to hit at least one home run. The Express average 3.75 runs per game (120 total) when failing to homer. Round Rock has not scored more than six runs in a game without a home run since an 8-4 win June 3 at Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, Round Rock averages 5.97 runs per game (382 total) when hitting at least one home run. The Express have homered in 27 of their last 38 games and scored a total of 29 runs in the other 11 games, getting shutout three times and scoring one run three times.
MORE HOME-RUN NUMBERS
Round Rock has won 16 of its last 19 games when hitting at least one home run. ¬Â¦ Only twice this season have the Express gone more than two straight games without a home run - a four-game stretch in mid-April, and a three-game stretch earlier this month. ¬Â¦ Round Rock has homered at least twice 38 times, going 29-9 in those games. The Express have homered multiple times in 13 road games, going 10-3 in those games. ¬Â¦ The Express are 16-2 when hitting at least three home runs and 7-0 when hitting at least four home runs. ¬Â¦ Round Rock has two five-homer games (June 18 vs. Omaha, June 19 vs. Omaha), two five-homer games (May 15 at Las Vegas, June 28 vs. Oklahoma City) and one six-homer game (April 9 vs. Iowa). ¬Â¦ The six-homer game was the second-best game total in franchise history, a single-game Dell Diamond record and one homer shy of the club record set at Albuquerque in 2006.
NO LATE LOSSES AS OF LATE
The Express have won 20 straight when leading after seven innings and 20 straight when leading after eight innings. Round Rock is 43-3 this season when leading after eight innings; all three losses came in a 12-game span in the second half of May. The last time Round Rock lost when leading after eight innings was May 28 when Iowa posted three ninth-inning runs for a 6-4 win at The Dell Diamond. The Express have not lost a game when leading after nine innings.
BIG-INNING THEORY
Round Rock is 19-5 this season when scoring at least four runs in an inning and 38-34 when failing to do such. However, the difference in record is even more pronounced based upon what the opponent does. The Express are 52-23 when not allowing an inning of at least four runs but 5-16 when the opponent posts such an inning. Round Rock posted an inning of at least four runs in three of the five victories when allowing an inning of at least four runs. Likewise, the opponent had an inning of at least four runs in three of Round Rock's five losses with an inning of at least four runs.
COMEBACK KIDS
The Express have 31 comeback wins this season (trailing at any point in the game). Round Rock has won 11 times when trailing after five innings, eight times when trailing after six innings, eight times when trailing after seven innings and four times when trailing entering the ninth inning.
FIVE IS THE KEY
Round Rock is 47-12 this season when scoring at least five runs, going 10-27 when scoring fewer than five runs. Meanwhile, Round Rock is 35-13 when allowing fewer than five runs and 22-26 when allowing five or more.
ROUND ROCK PERFECT FOLLOWING CONSECUTIVE LOSSES
The Express have not suffered a three-game skid this season, going 12-0 following consecutive losses. Every other PCL team has suffered three consecutive losses at least once. Reno lost three straight only once. Eleven of the other 14 teams have lost at least five straight at some point this season. Albuquerque and Las Vegas both suffered 10-game skids, the league's longest this season. Nashville and Sacramento both lost nine straight.
EXPRESS LEAD PCL IN ATTENDANCE
Round Rock leads the PCL in attendance, averaging 8,493 fans per game. Sacramento is second with a 7,992 per-game average, while Albuquerque (7,720) is third. The Express have finished second or third in the PCL each season since joining the league in 2005.
