Sounds edge 'Birds in extras

Memphis, Tenn. - Nashville outlasted Memphis 5-4 in 10 innings and snapped the Redbirds seven-game win streak at AutoZone Park on Monday night.

The Sounds scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning and held off another Redbirds rally in the bottom of the inning. The first three ‘Birds reached base with Brian Barden's RBI-single to left field drawing the team within a run. Right-hander Joe Bateman was summoned from the bullpen and recorded the final three outs to give the Sounds the victory and earn his first save of the season.

Adam Heether's infield single scored Tony Gwynn from second base in the top of the 10th to give Nashville the lead. Brad Nelson later scored from second base on a Bryan Anderson throwing error to give the Sounds a two-run cushion. Hernan Iribarren led the Sounds with three hits and Chris Woodward chipped in two extra-base hits of his own.

Mark Worrell took the loss for the ‘Birds after giving up two runs on one hit and two walks in the final frame. Starter P.J. Walters allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings. Luis Pena picked up the win despite his second blown save of the season. Nashville starter Richie Gardner pitched five innings and allowed one run, unearned, on five hits.

The Redbirds will send Jaime Garcia to the hill tomorrow night with the Sounds countering with left-hander Sam Narron. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
