Oklahoma City Comets News Release
YESTERDAY: Oklahoma and Omaha split a doubleheader yesterday with the RedHawks taking game one 2-0 and losing game two 10-8. Dustin Nippert threw a seven inning no-hitter in game one, walking two and striking out five. Joaquin Arias had two hits and Travis Metcalf drove in a run to pace Oklahoma. The Royals posted a seven-run fourth inning in game to build their lead. The RedHawks rallied but could not overcome the deficit. Nelson Cruz hit his 24th home run of the season in the nightcap loss.
NO-HIT NIPPERT: Dustin Nippert pitched the first no-hitter in RedHawks history yesterday during game one of the doubleheader at Omaha. It was the eighth no-hitter in Oklahoma history, and the first since Rick Helling's perfect game on August 13, 1996 at Nashville's All Sports Stadium. Nippert needed 86 pitches over seven innings to finish the game, which was also Oklahoma's first complete game shutout this season.
RAMIREZ REDO: Elizardo Ramirez will make his third start this season against the Z's. Ramirez had allowed five earned runs over 13 innings of work spanning two starts with one victory. Ramirez earned the win in Oklahoma's 8-2 win on May 20th and took a no-decision on June 13, a 5-3 RedHawk loss.
HARD DAYS KNIGHT:
Both of Brandon Knight's victories have come against Oklahoma this season. The right-hander faced off against the RedHawks in back-to-back appearances earlier this month, winning a relief outing on June 7 and capturing the victory in his lone start this season, a win at Oklahoma on June 14. Knight won on the 7th after pitching a scoreless tenth inning in the Zephyrs 4-3 win in ten. He started seven days later in game two of the split doubleheader, allowing three runs on four hits over six and a third.
GIVING CHASE:
Nelson Cruz is third in the league in hitting, second in the league in runs batted in, and second in the league in home runs. With slightly more than two months left in the regular season, Cruz is now just two home runs shy of Nate Gold's 2007 RedHawk-high of 26 home runs. Nelson's season-high for home runs is 27 in 2005, combined between stints with Huntsville and Nashville.
NEW ORLEANS AT A GLANCE:
The Zephyrs enter play tonight eight games behind the RedHawks in the American South... New Orleans has lost a season-high eight straight, and have gone 2-10 since leaving Oklahoma City on June 16... The Zephyrs have been outscored 54-28 during their current eight-game slide... The Z's have the league's lowest batting average at .248 courtesy of a .226 home batting average, compared to .270 on the road.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas beat Philadelphia 5-1. Former RedHawk Eric Hurley notched his first Major League victory. Frisco upended Northwest Arkansas 10-4... Bakersfield lost 8-4 at Visalia... Clinton fell against Quad Cities 4-3... Spokane outlasted Tri-City 1-0 in 13 innings.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks committed eight errors during the last two days, including three errors in each of their losses over the weekend... Oklahoma is tied with three other clubs for the second most wins during the month of June. Colorado Springs, Las Vegas, Memphis, and the RedHawks have all won 16 games this month, trailing only Iowa (20 June victories)... Nate Gold is riding his second six-game hitting streak this season with this current streak dating back to June 23.
