Nashville Sounds News Release
ALBUQUERQUE - The Albuquerque Isotopes scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to hang a 9-4 loss on the Nashville Sounds on Friday evening at Isotopes Park in the finale of a four-game series.
With the defeat, Nashville (23-31) finished its road trip with a 4-4 record.
Isotopes third baseman Dallas McPherson belted his PCL-leading 16th & 17th home runs in the contest, driving in a game-high four runs.
Nashville first baseman Brad Nelson continued his torrid May, pacing the Sounds with a 3-for-4 night at the plate.
The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hernan Iribarren led off the contest with a double to left, stole third, and scored on a Tony Gwynn sacrifice fly.
Center fielder Laynce Nix (2-for-3) doubled the Nashville advantage in the third with a two-out RBI double to center off Isotopes starter Eulogio De La Cruz. Tony Gwynn, who had preceded Nix with a two-out single, scored on the two-bagger.
McPherson halved the lead in the home half of the fourth when he drilled a one-out solo homer to right off Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin.
Nashville tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded Adam Heether groundout followed by a two-out RBI Brendan Katin single, making it a 4-1 game.
After being held to one run on four hits over the first six frames, the Isotopes erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 9-4 lead.
After Albuquerque loaded the bases with one out against Gulin on a pair of singles and a walk, former Sound Chris Barnwell greeted reliever Erasmo Ramirez with a two-run double to left that cut the Nashville lead to 4-3. Andrew Beattie followed with a two-run single that gave the âTopes their first lead of the evening.
Ramirez issued an intentional pass to John Gall before being relieved by Jason Shiell, who was greeted by a Tagg Bozied RBI single to center that plated Beattie. McPherson followed with his second roundtripper of the evening, a three-run shot to left that put the home team in front by five.
Albuquerque reliever Ross Wolf (1-1) was the beneficiary of the late Isotopes rally, picking up his first win of the year after working one scoreless inning.
Ramirez (1-2), who has allowed runs in each of his last three outings after opening the year by holding the opposition scoreless in 14 of 15 appearances, took the loss after suffering a blown save and failing to retire any of his three batters faced; all three scored.
Nashville catcher Vinny Rottino singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest effort by a Nashville player all season.
The Sounds return to Music City on Saturday to begin an eight-game homestand with the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the division-rival Iowa Cubs.
Right-hander Jeff Weaver (1-3, 6.69) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Iowa right-hander Randy Wells (4-1, 2.78).
