Fresno Grizzlies News Release

FRESNO, CA - The Grizzlies offense exploded for five runs in the first inning of a 7-1 win over the Tacoma Rainiers, taking their second straight game and earning a split of the four-game series. Nate Schierholtz's three-run homer keyed the big inning, the fourth time in his last five games the right-fielder has driven in multiple runs.

After a pair of first-inning runs led to a win on Thursday night, the Grizzlies offense was intent on starting quickly on Friday night. After Eugenio Velez led off the bottom of the first with a single, and Brian Bocock walked, Schierholtz fell behind in the count 0-2 before hitting a ball over the right-field wall for a three-run homer.

Later in the inning, RBI singles by Clay Timpner and Ivan Ochoa streched the lead to 5-0 after just one inning. Fresno added another run in the fifth inning on Scott McClain's RBI single, and one more in the sixth on an RBI single by Justin Leone for a 7-0 advantage.

Grizzlies starter Nick Pereira cruised through the first five innings, allowing just three hits. In the sixth, a double by Yung Chi Chen preceded an RBI double from Tug Hulett to get the Rainiers on the board, but it was only run they would muster.

Pereira scattered six hits, and struck out five, in 6.1 innings of work before handing off to the bullpen. Bartolome Fortunato went 1.2 innings without allowing a hit, before Geno Espineli finised off the 7-1 win with a perfect ninth inning.

The Grizzlies, having split their four game series with Tacoma, welcome the Tucson Sidewinders to Chukchansi Park on Saturday evening. The first 2,500 fans into the Park will receive the most anticipated giveaway item of the spring, the Drag Kings Bobble Doll. Right-hander Ryan Sadowski takes the hill for Fresno, while the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks send right-hander Esmerling Vasquez to the mound.
