DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds (55-65) scored six early runs off Iowa starter Felipe Paulino and went on to throttle the I-Cubs (65-54) 9-2 in Pacific Coast League action Friday night at Principal Park. Nashville took the series 3-1, but Iowa won the season set 10-6.
Paulino (3-7) lasted just 2.0 innings after allowing four runs in the first inning and two more in the second. He allowed a total of six hits and walked two with one strikeout.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Iowa tagged on its first run when Mike Baxter hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Tommy La Stella. Adron Chambers drove in another run in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout to first base.
Nashville added on two more runs in the top of the ninth to put the nail in the coffin.
John Andreoli, Christian Villanueva, Chris Valaika, Chambers, La Stella and Baxter had one hit apiece for Iowa. La Stella was the lone I-Cub with an extra-base hit. Iowa finished with six hits as a team.
Nashville right-hander Cody Martin (2-3) started on the mound and earned the win for the Sounds. He allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Joey Wendle paced Nashville offensively. He went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Ryan Roberts also clubbed a home run in fourth inning off Armando Rivero, who pitched a career-high 3.0 innings.
The loss marks the first time Iowa dropped back-to-back games since falling in six straight from July 21 to July 26.
The defeat also dropped Iowa to third place in the American Northern Division, 7.0 games behind Oklahoma City with 25 games to play. Iowa plays 17 of its final 25 on the road, including a five game series at OKC Aug. 31 through Sept. 3.
The I-Cubs will now head to Las Vegas to begin a four-game series with the 51s, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. First pitch is set for 9:05 p.m. CT at Cashman Field. Right-hander Carlos Pimentel (9-5, 3.05) is scheduled to start for Iowa against 51s righty Dillon Gee (6-2, 5.59). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
