In a recent report from Trust for America's Health titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2012, studies forecast for the first time what obesity rates will look like in Washington State by the year 2030. According to the data, 26.5 percent of adults are currently obese, while obesity rates are projected to reach 55.5 percent of the state population by 2030.
Children have become heavier as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Recent statistics indicate more than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.
The F as in Fat study shows that Washington State could prevent obesity-related diseases and dramatically reduce health care costs by encouraging residents to decrease their average body mass index by five percent.
"The best way to stay healthy is through exercise and choosing the right foods to feed your body," says Sounders FC forward David Estrada. "We get to share our own fitness tips and healthy snack ideas at these Family Fitness Nights. It's a great way to connect with local families and encourage them to choose healthier lifestyles."
SUBWAY® restaurants of Seattle continues to partner with Seattle Sounders FC to provide fitness and health programming in the Seattle/Tacoma area. These two organizations joined forces to reach more than 1,000 students and their family members last year.
