Eastern Conference Roundup: July 15
July 15, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
While the Crew was on a break from the regular season, Sporting Kansas City reclaimed the top spot in the Eastern Conference and the New York Red Bulls took down the first-place Montreal Impact.
Here is how the Eastern Conference looks after Week 20:
1. Sporting Kansas City - 33 pts. - Week 20: 3-0 Win vs. Toronto FC
Soony Saad has emerged as one of the most dangerous players in the League over the past month. This week, the 20-year-old forward led Sporting to victory with a brace as Peter Vermes' side regained the top spot in the East. Sporting travels West to Utah to face Supporters' Shield leading Real Salt Lake on Saturday in a clash of conference leaders.
2. Montreal Impact - 31 pts. - Week 20: 4-0 Loss at New York Red Bulls
After looking like the favorites to win the Eastern Conference through the first half of 2013, the Impact is 1-3-2 in its last six matches. Saturday's 4-0 loss to New York will certainly raise concern among the passionate supporters in Montreal. Two struggling teams will meet at Stade Saputo on Saturday as the Impact hosts FC Dallas, who has won one out of its last eight matches.
3. New York Red Bulls - 31 pts. - Week 20: 4-0 Win vs. Montreal Impact
The Red Bulls lived up their hype on Saturday, dropping four goals on the first-place Impact to make a statement in the Eastern Conference. If New York can ride momentum from Week 20's performance, then the Red Bulls should find themselves on top of the table come October. But then again, finding consistency has been New York's biggest problem in 2013. Thierry Henry and company travel to Toronto on Saturday.
4. Philadelphia Union - 30 pts. - Week 20: 3-1 Win vs. Chivas USA
The weather wreaked havoc on the field at PPL Park on Friday as the Union was able to capture a 3-1 victory over Chivas USA, registering its first win of the season without Jack McInerney. Philadelphia welcomes the Portland Timbers in Week 21.
5. Houston Dynamo - 29 pts. - Week 20: 2-1 Win at New England Revolution
A pair of Adam Moffat golazos increased the gap between the Dynamo and sixth-place New England to five points as Houston earned the road win. The Dynamo is idle in Week 21.
6. New England Revolution - 24 pts. - Week 20: 2-1 Loss vs. Houston Dynamo
Revolution goalkeeper suffered a little bad luck facing two Adam Moffat shots from distance in New England's loss at home to the Dynamo. The Revs look to rebound with matches in Colorado and Columbus this week.
7. Columbus Crew - 23 pts. - Week 20: Idle
The Crew was off from MLS play, but hosted FA Cup champion Wigan Athletic in an international friendly. Though the Black & Gold fell 2-1, rookie Ryan Finley showed promise scoring his first professional goal. The Crew hosts the New England Revolution on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET / FOX Sports Ohio).
8. Chicago Fire - 21 pts. - Week 20: 3-1 Loss at Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Aside from a stoppage-time goal from Patrick Nyarko, the Fire had no answers for the Whitecaps on Sunday. Chicago hosts D.C. United in Week 21.
9. Toronto FC - 13 pts. - Week 20: 3-0 Loss at Sporting Kansas City
The Reds were overmatched on the road against Sporting Kansas City, losing 3-0. Toronto FC will have two chances to bounce back this week with a road match against Chivas USA before hosting New York on Saturday.
10. D.C. United - 10 pts. - Week 20: Idle
United had a break from League play in Week 20, but 1-1 draw in a friendly with Chivas Guadalajara shows promise for a young squad.
