Sound Tigers too much for beat-up Bears Saturday

A depleted lineup proved to be too much for the BEARS to handle Saturday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers won 5-2 over HERSHEY. The loss was the fourth in five games for the BEARS, encompassing the team's season-high five-game road trip.
Bridgeport struck first late in the first period, ending a lengthy period for HERSHEY of scoreless hockey. Jason Pitton scored his fourth goal of the season at 13:58 from Masi Marjamaki. The two-on-one goal gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead, and it also was the first goal scored by either team involving the BEARS in nearly 79 minutes dating back to the game in Binghamton Friday. Former BEARS defenseman Mark Wotton earned the second assist on the goal, as the Tigers took their 1-0 lead to first intermission. Bridgeport outshot the BEARS 12-11 in the first period as well.
The Sound Tigers turned to the power play early in the second period to run its lead out to 2-0. Jeff Tambellini scored on a snap shot between the circles at 2:02 with the man advantage to increase the Tiger lead. Alexandre Giroux picked up his 28th goal of the season from a pass out of the right corner from Chris Bourque at 8:46 to get HERSHEY on the scoreboard, but the Tigers would strike again later in the period. Robert Nilsson scored on a breakaway against BEARS goaltender Daren Machesney to run the score at 3-1. Despite 16 HERSHEY shots in the middle period, the BEARS headed to the dressing room down by two.
The teams traded goals in the third period, with Frans Nielsen scoring for Bridgeport at 15:53, and Giroux potted his second of the game and 29th of the season at 16:03 to round out the scoring. Machesney suffered his third defeat in five decisions, making 22 saves on 27 shots.
Notes: The BEARS had six players miss the game due to injury. Trevor Byrne, Dean Arsene, Matt Hendricks, Chad Wiseman, and Sasha Pokulok all missed Friday's game in Binghamton. Pete Vandermeer suffered a broken leg Friday and will be out long-term. Malcolm MacMillian was recalled from Reading (ECHL) to replace Vandermeer in the lineup. The game began the second half of the 2006-07 for HERSHEY, and also concluded a season long five-game road trip. The BEARS will play the team's first home game of 2007 Sunday when the Albany River Rats visit GIANT Center at 5:00 p.m. The first 5,000 fans through the gates Sunday will receive a free team photograph of the 2006-07 team. Bridgeport and HERSHEY will meet next on Saturday, January 20 at GIANT Center in a 7:00 p.m. start.
