Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars faced the Toronto Marlies for the second and final time this season on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Downtown Des Moines. Toronto escaped with a 5-4 overtime victory to split the season-series at one-game-apiece

The first period started out slow for both teams as the Stars did not register a shot on Toronto Goaltender Jean-Francois Racine until 9:30 had past in the period. Toronto got on the board first when Kevin Baker was able to get the puck past Iowa Netminder Dan Ellis at 18:29. Tyson Nash and Chris St. Jacques picked-up the assists on the only goal of the period. The Marlies finished the period with only eight shots while the Stars were only able to get four shots on goal.

Iowa came out firing in the second period when Junior Lessard took a cross-ice pass from fellow linemate Joel Lundqvist and fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net to tie the game at 1-1 just :41 into the period. Stars Defenseman Marty Wilford got the second assist on Lessard's power-play goal. Less then five minutes later, Iowa showed off some nice passing when Lundqvist hit Lessard with a textbook give-and-go pass resulting in Lessard's second goal of the game giving Iowa the 2-1 lead. The Marlies came right back and tied the game at two when Kevin Baker was able to beat Dan Ellis for his second of the game. Robbie Earl and David Cloutier picked up the assists. Iowa recaptured the lead when Janos Vas was able to pound home the rebound off a Lundqvist shot at 14:59.

The Stars and Marlies skated a scoreless third period until there were four minutes left to go. Iowa's Yared Hagos scored off a nice backhand feed from Marius Holtet to put the Stars up 4-2. With less then two minutes left in the period, Toronto pulled their goalie Jean-Francois Racine for the extra attacker. With the extra skater on, the Marlies were able to cut the lead to 4-3 when Jay Harrison fired a one-timer past Dan Ellis. Tyson Nash tied the game at four with :11 seconds left to force overtime.

In the overtime period, Toronto's John Mitchell put home a rebound shot past a sprawling Dan Ellis to send the Marlies away with the 5-4 victory. Ellis faced 40 shots in the contest.
