Abbotsford Heat News Release
Defenseman Tim Ramholt scored the deciding goal in a shootout to help the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to a 5-4 over the Houston Aeros on Saturday at the Civic Auditorium. It was the third straight win for the Knights who move a season-high eleven games over .500.
The Knights took the lead just past the ten minute mark of the first period. Brad Ference took a pass from Brandon Prust at the right point and fired a shot on goal. The ricochet found the stick of Carsen Germyn who slammed it home for his eleventh goal of the year.
The Knights extended that lead at 5:20 of the second period. Justin Taylor captured a clearing pass at the right point. He walked around the net and stuffed a wraparound shot past goalie Josh Harding to make it 2-0.
The Aeros battled back just 1:42 later. Off a scramble in front of Curtis McElhinney, Danny Irmen knocked home a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1. Then at the end of a powerplay, Jason Morgan converted a pass from Irmen to tie the game.
The Knights regained the lead late in the period. Andrei Taratukhin sent Germyn away down the right wing. He blew a slapshot past Harding to put Omaha up 3-2 after two.
Omaha took what looked like a safe lead early in the third period when Kris Chucko scored off the rebound of a shot by Taylor to make it 4-2.
But the Aeros found a way to tie it. First, Mattias Weinhandl scored on the powerplay at 13:37. Then Irmen got his second of the game off a netmouth scramble with just 1:55 to go in regulation.
In the shootout, Germyn scored in the first round but Weinhandl answered back in the second to tie it at 1-1. It stayed that way until the fifth round when Ramholt snapped a hard shot over Harding's blocker. McElhinney then stopped Benoit Pouliot on Houston's last attempt to finish off the win, the third straight shootout win by the Knights over Houston.
The Knights are now 24-13-3-0 and have won all five meetings with Houston this season.
Three Stars: 1. Carsen Germyn (OMA) - 2 goals; 2. Justin Taylor (OMA) - 1 goal, 1 assist; 3. Danny Irmen (HOU) - 2 goals, 1 assist
