Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The New York Islanders, NHL parent club of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, have signed veteran defenseman Mark Wotton to a two-year contract.
Wotton helped the Hershey Bears to the AHL's Calder Cup championship last season. He registered 7 goals and 19 assists for 26 points and had 58 penalty minutes in 69 regular season games with the Bears. Wotton added four assists and was a plus-3 in 14 playoff games with Hershey.
In 2004-05 Wotton and Islanders General Manager Garth Snow both played in Russia for St. Petersburg SKA during the NHL work stoppage. Snow describes Wotton as a good leader for the young defensemen in the Islanders system.
Wotton, 32, is 5 foot 10 and 196 pounds and is a Warren, Manitoba native. He has played in 43 NHL games (42 with Vancouver and one with Dallas) and has 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points in his NHL career.
Selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the 10th round of the 1992 NHL entry draft, Wotton broke into professional hockey with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades in 1989 and played five seasons for the Blades before joining the AHL's Syracuse Crunch (then Vancouver's top affiliate) in 1994-95.
