January 21, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, outlasted the Albany River Rats for a 3-2 shootout win at home Friday to snap a nine-game winless skid, having gone 0-8-0-1 since a home, shootout win over the Philadelphia Phantoms on December 22nd.
The Sound Tigers opened the scoring on the power play with exactly two minutes left in the first period as Jim Campbell notched his fourth goal of the season off assists from Rob Collins and Brendan Yarema. It was the team-leading 14th helper and 24th point for Collins while Yarema now has points in four of seven games since signing with the Sound Tigers.
Eric Godard doubled the Sound Tigers' lead to 2-0 12:36 into the middle frame with his career-high fourth goal and tenth point of the season off an assist from Sean Bergenheim. However, Albany got on the scoreboard with 1:16 left in the second period as Dean McAmmond scored his eighth goal of the season, unassisted, to make it 2-1.
The River Rats tied the game 8:44 into the third period on Aleksander Suglobov's 13th goal of the year with McAmmond earning the lone assist, his team-leading 23rd helper and 31st point.
After a scoreless overtime, in which Albany had a 4-3 shots on goal advantage, the teams proceeded to the shootout.
Rob Collins improved to three-for-three this season with an opening-round goal, and goaltender Dieter Kochan stopped the first three attempts he faced for the Sound Tigers. Following a successful attempt by the River Rats Ryan Murphy, John Morlang scored the deciding goal in the bottom of the fourth round before Kochan stoned Albany captain Pascal Rheaume's first attempt of the season in the top of the fifth to seal the win.
Morlang was the first star of the game, Bergenheim the second and Godard the third. Kochan made 34 saves improving to 2-0 in shootouts this season while River Rats netminder Scott Clemmensen made 24 stops as Albany had a 36-27 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 4 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.
