WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost their 2005-06 regular-season opener 8-1 on the road to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Wednesday.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened the scoring with two goals in a 37-second span early in the first period as Matt Hussey tallied on the power play off assists from Ryan Whitney and Daniel Carcillo to make it 1-0 at 2:58 and Erik Christensen doubled the lead at 3:35 off assists from Andy Schneider and Michel Ouellet.
The Penguins scored four times in a 6:07 span early in the middle frame to make it 6-0. Christensen made it 3-0 on the power play off assists from Carcillo and Whitney at 1:56. Tomas Surovy upped the lead to 4-0 off assists from Whitney and Noah Welch on the advantage at 4:10. Christensen completed to the hat trick off assists from goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and Ouellet to make it 5-0 at 7:11. Surovy finished the barrage at 6-0 of assists from Colby Armstrong and Ryan Lannon chasing netminder Wade Dubielewicz from the Sound Tigers net with ten saves on 16 shots at the 8:03 mark.
Just 45 seconds into the third period, Guillaume Lefebvre notched his first of the season, on the power play, off assists from Ouellet and Whitney to make it 7-0.
The Sound Tigers finally got on the board with 7:37 left to play as Allan Rourke, who had four goals in the preseason, beat Fleury from a tough angle at the bottom of the left circle just as a power play expired off an assist from rookie Luch Aquino to make it 7-1, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton answered 1:09 later as Christensen was credited with his fourth goal of the game when an outlet pass banked off the skate of a Sound Tigers back-checker to finish the evening at 8-1.
Christensen was the first star of the game, Whitney the second, and Surovy the third. The Penguins were 4 for 6 on the power play while the Sound Tigers were 0 for 8 and had a 28-27 shots on goal advantage, including 14-7 in the third period.
