Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALBANY, NY - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 5-1 on the road to the Albany River Rats Friday in a game that was marred by 138 penalty minutes and 25 power plays.
Despite being shorthanded four times, with the final advantage carrying into the intermission, the Sound Tigers took a 1-0 lead on Barrett Heisten's second goal of the season, his third point in as many games, with 1:17 left in the opening frame. Heisten left the penalty box after serving the third shorthanded situation, crossed the neutral zone, took the puck over the Albany line and dropped it to Ryan Kraft who fired a shot that was stopped, but Heisten pushed the rebound past River Rats Goaltender Ari Ahonen. Kraft earned the only assist on the play.
Albany took a 2-1 lead with a pair of second-period, power-play goals, including one on the advantage that carried over from the first 20 minutes of play. Ilkka Pikkarainen tied the score with his second goal of the season, and against the Sound Tigers, at the 43 second mark off assists from Tuomas Pihlman and Zach Parise, and Aleksander Suglobov gave the River Rats their first lead with 6:35 left in the middle frame with his third goal of the year off assists from Krisjanis Redlihs and Aaron Voros. Suglobov's goal was scored on a five-on-three power play.
Albany sandwiched a pair of third-period, power-play goals around a four-on-four tally to take a 5-1 lead. Voros redirected a Redlihs shot for his second goal of the season at 2:59 with Suglobov also assisting on the play, Suglobov added his second of the game and fourth of the year off a pretty feed from Dean McAmmond at 8:26, and Eric Johansson finished the scoring with his first of the season with 10:11 left to play off assists from Voros and Redlihs.
The River Rats were 4 for 17 on the power play, including a trio of two-man advantages. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 8 on the power play losing their last five straight advantages when penalties were called against them. Albany had a 43-30 shots on goal advantage. Dieter Kochan made 38 saves in a losing effort while Ahonen stopped 29 shots.
Suglobov was the first star of the game, Voros the second and Redlihs the third.
Richard Seeley and Kevin Colley served as assistant captains for the Sound Tigers Friday.
