Springfield Falcons News Release

Portland, ME – The Springfield Falcons fell 3-2 in overtime to the Portland Pirates before a crowd of 3,924 at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday night. Pirates right wing Jared Aulin finished a breakaway 2:19 into the extra session for the game-winning goal. Forwards Nick Tarnasky and Andre Deveaux provided the scoring for the Falcons. Second-year pro Ryan Craig assisted on both Springfield goals.

A pass from Pirates veteran center Trent Whitfield sent Aulin in alone on Springfield goaltender Jamie Storr for the winning score in overtime. Aulin went to his backhand to beat the Falcons netminder for the overtime goal. The marker was the second of the season for Aulin, who was a teammate of Storr's with the Los Angeles Kings during the 2002-03 season.

The Falcons built a 2-0 lead on the strength of a first period in which the club outshot the Pirates, 14-9. Rookies Tarnasky and Deveaux each posted their first professional goals in providing Springfield the opening frame lead. Defenseman Andreas Holmqvist collected his first AHL point with an assist on Tarnasky's marker 4:50 into the game. Craig registered the lone assist on Deveaux's goal at the 11:06 mark.

Following a scoreless second period, the Pirates rallied to tie the contest in the third with back-to-back goals just 1:32 apart. Right wing Boyd Gordon knocked in a loose rebound 5:58 into the final frame. Forward Graham Mink followed with a power-play goal at 7:30 to knot the game. The Pirates capitalized on a major penalty for boarding issued to J.F. Soucy that created the club's man advantage.

Storr turned aside 36 of 39 shots in the game while Portland netminder Maxime Oullet made 21 saves on 23 shots from the Falcons.

The Falcons were held scoreless during four power play opportunities in the game. The Pirates finished the contest one-for-four with the man advantage.

The division rivals combined to accumulate 97 penalty minutes in the rough-and-tumble affair. The Falcons were whistled for a total of 55 minutes in the box.
