Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-1 on the road to the Wilkes-Barre/Penguins Saturday.
The teams traded a pair of penalty kills in a scoreless first period with the Sound Tigers denying Wilkes-Barre-Scranton during 38 seconds of a five-on-three advantage in the final minute of the opening frame.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead with a pair of second-period goals. Colby Armstrong tapped home a rebound for his tenth of the season to make it 1-0 at the 8:10 mark off assists from Ryan Whitney and Erik Christensen. Whitney then fired a wrist shot past Sound Tigers goaltender Dieter Kochan for a power-play goal to make it 2-0 at 11:52 off assists from Ross Lupaschuk and Michel Ouellet.
Rob Collins pulled the Sound Tigers to within 2-1 with 47.9 seconds left in the middle frame intercepting a pass in the center-ice circle and breaking in alone for his team-leading 11th goal and 25th point of the season. The goal by Collins was unassisted.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton regained the two-goal lead at 3-1 5:05 into the third period on the 16th goal of the season by Ramzi Abid off assists from Kris Beech and David Koci. Perhaps weary after a long day of travel home from Winnipeg yesterday, the Penguins slowed the pace of the game through the end of the period with a series of icings.
The Sound Tigers called timeout and pulled Kochan in favor of an extra attacker with 1:56 left to play but could not score.
Whitney was the first star of the game, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton netminder Dany Sabourin the second with 25 saves and Abid the third. Kochan finished with 20 saves as the Sound Tigers had a 26-23 shots on goal advantage. The Penguins were 1 for 6 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.
The Sound Tigers will visit the Providence Bruins this coming Friday at 7:05 p.m. They will return home to host the Philadelphia Phantoms next Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Hartford Wolf Pack next Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
