CINCINNATI, OH - Shane O'Brien scored at the 2:52 mark of overtime to complete a four-goal comeback and give the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks a 4-3 victory over the visiting Hamilton Bulldogs at the Cincinnati Gardens on Friday night.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Bulldogs opened the scoring. Gavin Morgan scored his fourth goal in two games with a wrist shot over the glove hand of Mighty Ducks goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Michael Lambert earned the lone assist on the goal at 14:10 of the first period.
The Bulldogs would go ahead 2-0 just 1:22 later when Corey Locke scored his 13th goal of the year. Jonathan Ferland and Benjamin Carpentier added assists.
Into the second period and the Bulldogs would score at 3:46 on the power play. Defenceman Philippe Plante snuck in from the point and tallied his third goal of the year. Plante's power-play goal was his seventh all-time with the Bulldogs, which tied him with former Bulldog Francois Beauchemin for the most Bulldogs power-play goals all-time by a defenceman.
Goaltender Frederic Cassivi replaced Bryzgalov in the Mighty Ducks net after Plante's goal. Bryzgalov made five saves on eight Bulldogs shots in 23:46 of work.
Cincinnati would score three consecutive third period goals to tie the game 3-3.
The Mighty Ducks broke Bulldogs goaltender Dan Ellis' shutout at 2:06 of the third period. Scoring for Cincinnati was Pierre Parenteau. Mighty Ducks leading scorer Joffrey Lupul had the only assist on Parenteau's fourth goal of the season.
Joffrey Lupul would score at 7:47 to bring the Mighty Ducks within one goal of the Bulldogs. Chris Kunitz had the first assist, and Cambridge native Tim Brent had the other helper.
Cincinnati tied the game 3-3 with a power-play goal from Michael Holmqvist at 11:02. Lupul once again had an assist, along with Niagara Falls' Zenon Konopka.
The Mighty Ducks completed the comeback when defenceman Shane O'Brien earned his second goal of the year 2:52 into overtime. Holmqvist and Casey Hankinson had assists on the winner.
The Bulldogs scored once on nine opportunities with the man advantage. Hamilton has scored at least once on the power play in the past four games. Cincinnati had two goals on eight power play opportunities.
Hamilton has a record of two wins and five losses when their games have been decided in overtime this season.
The Hamilton Bulldogs next action will take place on Saturday, January 22nd when they visit the Milwaukee Admirals at the Bradley Center.
