Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â Shane Willis made a dramatic return to the Springfield Falcons' lineup by scoring the game-winning goal with 1:59 remaining in regulation in a 2-1 win over the Providence Bruins at the Springfield Civic Center on Saturday night. Rookie defenseman Mike Egener also scored for the Falcons. Springfield netminder Jamie Storr turned aside 30 of 31 shots to earn his eighth victory of the season.
Falcons blueliner Andreas Holmqvist set up the game-winning tally by carrying the puck deep into the slot in front of the Providence net before dishing the puck to Willis in the left circle. Willis flipped the puck over the shoulder of Bruins goaltender Hannu Toivonen for the score. The Falcons forward returned to the team's lineup for the game after missing nine games with an injury.
Saturday's defeat extended Providence's current losing streak to four games. The win was the Falcons' first over Providence since downing the Bruins, 4-3, on the opening night of the season. The P-Bruins won the following five match-ups.
Both teams were scoreless on two chances with the man advantage in the game. Providence held a 31-27 shot advantage for the night.
Following several minutes of constant pressure, the Falcons opened scoring 10:23 into the game on a slap shot from the left point by Egener that squeezed between the pads of Toivonen. The goal was the first of Egener's pro career. Center Jason Jaspers collected an assist on the marker. Like Willis, Jaspers also made a return from an injury after missing the Falcons' previous two contests.
The Bruins responded to tie the score at 13:19 when forward Brendan Walsh muscled the puck down the left side of the Falcons' zone before centering to Andy Hilbert who scored from between the face-off circles. The goal was Hilbert's team leading 21st of the campaign.
Fans who held tickets to Saturday night's game that were not able to attend the game due to the weather can exchange their tickets to the game for tickets to the Falcons' contest on Feb. 26 versus the Norfolk Admirals at the Civic Center box office.
The Falcons will play their next three games on the road including back-to-back contests against the Norfolk Admirals next Friday and Saturday.
