Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HARTFORD, CT -- Tyler Haskins scored the game-winning goal and Sean Bentivoglio added two assists as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers held off the Hartford Wolf Pack, 4-2, Friday night at the XL Center. The Sound Tigers have now won three of their last four games to improve to 26-23-3-6 on the season.
The Wolf Pack had the top scoring chance of the first period as Paul Crowder took a cross-crease pass from Dane Byers and tried to stuff a shot into an open corner. However, Nathan Lawson dove to make a sprawling save on the chance and keep the game scoreless. Midway through the frame, Hartford's veteran heavyweight Donald Brahsear dropped the gloves against Bridgeport's Joel Rechlicz.
Corey Locke put the Wolf Pack on the board first, scoring a power-play goal 4:02 into the second period. Byers picked up a loose puck along the boards and sent a back door pass to Locke who was wide open at the bottom of the face-off circle. Locke took the pass and one-timed a slapshot past Lawson for his 22nd goal of the year.
Jeremy Reich tied the game at the 7:48 mark of the second. Robin Figren carried the puck behind the net and sent a centering pass in front of the crease where a charging Reich hammered a shot into the top of the goal to put the Sound Tigers on the board. Greg Moore gave the Sound Tigers the lead with a power-play tally with 7:35 left in the second. Mark Flood drove a shot from the point that Moore deflected past Chad Johnson for his 15th goal of the season.
The Wolf Pack tied the game 22 seconds into the third period. Justin Soryal brought the puck into the offensive zone and fired a pass down to Brodie Dupont who ripped a shot past Lawson to make it 2-2. Haskins put the Sound Tigers ahead for good just 41 seconds later. Matt Martin sent a centering pass out from behind the net to Haskins in the slot and he cracked a one-timer past Johnson for his sixth goal of the year.
Hartford had six minutes of power-play time in the third period, including a four-minute power-play which resulted from a double-minor on Trevor Gillies. However, the Wolf Pack did not even record a shot on goal on any of the man advantage time.
Trevor Smith sealed the victory for Bridgeport, scoring an empty-net goal with 15 seconds left. Smith had just come out of the penalty box when Corey Potter fanned on a shot from the point. Smith grabbed the loose puck and sent it into the open cage.
The Sound Tigers outshot the Wolf Pack 22-20. Lawson made 18 saves for the victory while Johnson stopped 19 shots in the loss.
The Sound Tigers are back home on Saturday as they host the Abbotsford Heat at 7:00 pm. The game will feature the annual Youth Hockey Shootout Finals. Sunday afternoon, Hartford visits Harbor Yard for a 3:00 pm matinee. For individual game tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
