LOWELL, Mass. - Goaltender Mike McKenna's 27-save shutout performance and three straight goals from the power play helped the Lowell Devils defeat the Manchester Monarchs, 5-0, on Friday at the Tsongas Center. The victory put an end to the Devils' seven-game winless streak and pulled them within two points of second place in the Atlantic Division.
Already leading 2-0 heading into the second period, the Devils would push their lead to four thanks to a pair of goals on the man-advantage. After the Monarchs failed to clear the zone, Cory Murphy stepped into a slapshot from the slot that found the top right corner at 8:32.
Matt Taormina then converted with 39.2 seconds left before the intermission when his rising snapshot ricocheted under the legs of Jonathan Bernier. Taormina's ninth goal of the season was part of a three-point night (1g-2a) for the rookie defenseman.
The breaks continued to go Lowell's way five minutes into the third as Ben Walter's centering pass tipped off the stick of Manchester defenseman Joe Piskula and into the net for a power play marker. Walter would also add two assists in the match.
McKenna kept the Monarchs' offense off the board to gather his 17th win and third shutout of the season.
It took only 35 seconds for the Devils to jump ahead 1-0, as Nick Palmieri's wrist shot deflected off the back glass to the near post where Alexander Vasyunov dumped in his 13th of the season.
Stephen Gionta added to Lowell's cushion at the 4:06 mark of the same period, getting a redirection of Rob Davison's point shot past Bernier.
The Lowell Devils complete their two-game home set on Saturday, Feb 20 at 7:00PM against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Go online to AHLlive.com to listen or watch all of the live Devils action. For tickets, call (978) 458-PUCK or go to www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
