Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Speedy forwards Mark Parrish and Dana Tyrell each had two points to help the Norfolk Admirals (29-25-3-1) defeat the Springfield Falcons (18-31-9-2) 3-1 on Friday night at the Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals and Falcons will play again tomorrow night at Scope.

The Admirals opened scoring 3:39 into the game. Ryan Craig forced a turnover in the Springfield zone near the right circle and moved the puck to Dana Tyrell in the slot. Tyrell attempted a backhand shot but the puck rolled over his stick and went behind the net. Tyrell followed the loose puck and attempted a wraparound shot near the right leg of Springfield goaltender Devan Dubnyk that bounced off legs and ended up in front of Craig on the goal line. Craig sent a no-look backhander into the net for his team-leading 18th goal of the season.

Norfolk's lead doubled just over three minutes later with a shorthanded goal. Mark Parrish forced a steal in the Admirals zone near the left point and started a two-on-none break with Tyrell. The duo entered the attacking zone with a give-and-go before Tyrell faked a shot from the left circle and slid the puck across the slot to Parrish for a shot over the left leg of Dubnyk at 6:57.

The Falcons got on the board with a power play goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first period. Taylor Chorney sent a wrist shot from the high slot that was deflected by Chris Armstrong on top of the crease. The puck, which was sailing high on the initial shot by Chorney, was deflected down by Armstrong between the legs of Norfolk netminder Dustin Tokarski to cut Norfolk's lead to 2-1 after one period.

After a scoreless second stanza that saw Devan Dubnyk turn aside all 23 Norfolk shots he faced, the Admirals stretched their lead back to two goals with Brandon Bochenski's 78th career Admirals goal. Scott Jackson forced a turnover behind Tokarski and Parrish sent a long breakout pass to Bochenski in the neutral zone for a half-step breakaway. Bochenski faked a forehand shot before roofing a backhander past Dubnyk at 8:09 for the 3-1 final score.

Dustin Tokarski (24 shots, 23 saves) earned the win. Devan Dubnyk (44 shots, 41 saves) was saddled with the loss.

Norfolk was 0-8 on the power play. Springfield was 1-7.
