The Wolf Pack dashed the Sound Tigers' hopes of a playoff push Saturday night in Hartford and their intrastate rival handed the Sound Tigers a 3-2 loss in the team's final game of the season Sunday afternoon at Arena at Harbor Yard. Trevor Smith and Jeff Tambellini scored the final two goals of the season for the Sound Tigers, who finishing fifth in the East Division, one position back of a playoff spot.
Tonight was Fan Appreciation Night for Sound Tiger fans, but the Wolf Pack were able to swing the momentum their way, scoring just 22 seconds into the game. Greg Moore picked up a loose puck just above the right hash marks and fed a pass to Pierre Parenteau who wristed a shot over Mike Morrison's glove.
After Hartford's Corey Potter made it 2-0 on a rebound goal 7:44 into the second period, the Sound Tigers broke through on the board a little more than four minutes later. Ben Walter skated into the offensive zone and fed a pass Kyle Okposo in the corner. Okposo made a quick move around a defenseman in the corner and snapped a pass to Tambellini in the high slot. The Sound Tigers' leading scorer wasted no time in burying a shot over high over the glove of Wolf Pack goaltender, Miika Wiikman for his 38th tally of the season to tighten the score at 2-1.
Trevor Smith evened the score at two a little less than six minutes later eclipsing the 20 goal plateau for the season. Blake Comeau hit Smith in almost the same location as Tambellini on the team's first goal. Smith received the pass and wristed the puck through Wiikman for the goal. Comeau's helper was his 15th with the Sound Tigers this season and gave him a point in each of the six games he played in since returning from the Islanders. Matt Keith also had an assist on the tally.
The Wolf Pack regained the lead three and a half minutes into the third period on a ricochet goal. Michael Sauer threw a puck on net from the high slot that went off the side of the post and past Morrison for the 3-2 lead. Greg Moore collected his second assist on the afternoon.
The Sound Tigers peppered Wiikman late in an attempt to tie the game, but fell short as he turned away five shots in the last minute and a half. Morrison finished the game with 31 saves on 34 shots, while the team held the Wolf Pack without a power-play goal in the game.
