Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Sound Tigers suffered their fourth straight loss in Binghamton to the Senators, 5-2. Senators' forward, Tyler Donati had three points against the Sound Tigers tallying the team's game-winning goal with just under five minutes to play in the second period.
"It is always tough to lose a game, let alone four in a row," Sound Tigers forward Tim Jackman said. "There is nothing we can do about tonight though, we have to get on the bus and go to Hershey tomorrow and give an honest effort to try to pull off a victory against the Bears."
In the lineup tonight, Pascal Morency did his best to get under the skin of the Senators by fighting Binghamton defenseman, Geoff Waugh 4:21 into the first period. Morency faired well, as he ended up on top at the end of the fight. As he got to his feet, Morency did his patented move, grabbing the Sound Tiger crest on his jersey and showing it to the Senators bench. After, he flexed his muscles, and skated to his team's respective penalty box. The heavyweight match that was teased in today's preview took place at about the halfway mark of the opening period when Kip Brennan and Jeremy Yablonski dropped the gloves. Brennan landed numerous blows to Yablonski's head and was able to maneuver Yablonski well, keeping him off balance and blocking most of Yablonski's blows.
The Sound Tigers broke the scoreless tie at 14:02 of the first period when Frans Nielsen scored his second goal of the season. Jeff Tambellini skated into the Binghamton zone and snapped a shot on Senator goalie, Jeff Glass. Glass made the initial save with his blocker but the rebound fluttered in front of him where Nielsen out-worked a Binghamton defender and chipped the puck over Glass' shoulder for the 1-0 lead. It only took 53 seconds for the Senators to tie the score at 1-1 when Donati scored his first of the season with Matt Kinch tallying the only assist on the goal.
In the second period, Binghamton took the lead at 8:18 as the Sound Tigers had just finished killing a penalty. Niko Dimitrakos, parked in the crease, re-directed a centering pass from Ilya Zubov past Joey MacDonald for his third goal of the season, giving his squad the 2-1 lead, but like the Senators did in the first period, the Sound Tigers would quickly answer. Blake Comeau grabbed a loose puck in the near corner and cut through the Binghamton slot, beating two Senator defensemen with two nifty toe drag moves. Comeau found an opening and wristed a shot through the legs of Glass, tying the score at 2-2 on his second goal of the season. Tim Jackman and Matthew Spiller had the assists on the goal. Before the middle frame would end, Binghamton would regain the lead going into the third period. With the Sound Tigers on a delayed penalty call, Senators' Donati used the extra man to find space in the Sound Tigers' slot and wrist a shot over the glove of Sound Tigers' net-minder MacDonald, for his second goal of the game and second on the season for the 3-2 lead.
Binghamton would add to their victory at 9:06 when Greg Mauldin caught a saucer pass from Donati behind both Sound Tiger defensemen and came in all alone on MacDonald. Mauldin snapped a shot over MacDonald's glove, his third of the season, making the score 4-2. Senators' captain, Denis Hamel would seal the victory with an empty net goal at 18:27, his sixth goal of the season, winning the game for Binghamton 5-2.
The Sound Tigers were 0-6 on the power-play and 1-1 on the penalty kill. The Sound Tigers out-shot Binghamton 37-31.
