Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, CT â The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, finished a season-opening home-stand with a perfect 3-0 record after a come-from-behind 3-2 overtime win over the Albany River Rats Wednesday.
After a scoreless first period, Albany sandwiched a pair of power-play goals around an even-strength Sound Tigers tally to take a 2-1 lead. Aaron Voros opened the scoring with his first goal of the year 6:33 into the middle frame off assists from Ivan Khomutov and Dean McAmmond, Sean Bergenheim answered for the Sound Tigers with his first of the year off assists from Barrett Heisten and Ryan Caldwell 6:23 later, and Tuomas Pihlman notched his first of the season at 16:27 off assists from Zach Parise and Brett Clouthier.
After killing five power plays, the River Rats put themselves shorthanded with a bench minor for too many men on the ice early in the third period, and the Sound Tigers took advantage less than a minute later as Captain Keith Aldridge scored his first goal with the team off an assist from Chris Campoli to tie the game at 2-2 6:36 into the third period. Campoli is now on a three-game assist streak.
Rob Collins won the game just 1:57 into overtime on the only shot of the extra session. It was the first goal of this season for Collins who led the Sound Tigers in scoring during last spring's playoffs with three assists and five points. Assistant Captain Jody Robinson earned the only assist on the play on which Collins did a nice job to corral a bouncing puck, turn up ice on a two-on-one rush with Blaine Down and cut through the slot for the winning shot.
Collins was the first star of the game, Aldridge was the second, and Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz was the third with 25 saves. Scott Clemmensen made 18 saves for Albany who was 2 for 7 on the power play and had a 27-21 shots on goal advantage. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 8 on the power play.
The Sound Tigers will visit the River Rats this Friday at 7 p.m. then return home to host the Hartford Wolf Pack this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and the Binghamton Senators this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. before heading out of town for five straight road games.
All Sound Tigers games are broadcast live at www.soundtigers.com. Friday's and Sunday's games will also be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM. Saturday's game is subject to pre-emption on WICC.
