Somerset tops Ducks in opener

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 2, 2008) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots on Monday 11-6 at Citibank Park.

The Patriots bolted from the gates with five runs in the first inning, with Vito Chiaravalloti delivering a two-run single in the frame. Somerset built up a 10-0 lead before the Ducks were able to cut it to five. Brandon Larson had a homer and two RBI for the Patriots while Gera Alvarez socked a homer as well. Donaldo Mendez went 4-for-4 for Long Island. P.J. Rose had a two-run double, and Ray Navarrete drove home two and picked up his first triple of the season.

Andy Van Hekken (1-1) worked six innings for Somerset, allowing four runs on seven hits in the winning effort. Mike Myers (1-1) took the loss in three innings of work. The Ducks bullpen combination of Kevin Mannix, Ryan Knippschild and Todd Williams combined to allow just one run over the final six innings of the contest.

The Ducks continue their three-game series against Somerset on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans to the ballpark will receive QuackerJack "Go Green" Figurines, courtesy of Clean Air NY.
