Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - The 2007 Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Franklin Gracesqui.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Gracesqui was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 21st round of the 1998 amateur draft. He pitched in the Blue Jays organization from 1998 until 2002 when he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the Rule 5 Minor League Draft.
Gracesqui started with the Marlins organization in 2003 with Carolina of the Southern League, and was brought up to AAA Albuquerque the following year. He pitched well enough to earn a call-up to the major leagues in 2004, where he made seven relief appearances for the Marlins.
Last season, Gracesqui pitched for the Chunichi Dragons of the Japan Central League. With Chunichi, Gracesqui made 17 appearances and pitched to a 3-0 record with a 2.35 earned run average for the eventual Japan Series champions.
The 6'5 Gracesqui has made 240 appearances at the minor league level, posting a 16-22 record with a 3.73 ERA. In 362.1 innings pitched, Gracesqui recorded 382 strikeouts and opposing batters hit .226 against him.
