Patriots Roast Ducks 11-6

CENTRAL ISLIP , NY- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 11-6 in front of 5,615 fans at Citibank Park on Monday evening.

Somerset struck first with a nine batter, five run top of the first inning to take an early 5-0 lead. The Patriots loaded the bases on a single to center by centerfielder Elliott Ayala, a hit-by-pitch to shortstop Gera Alvarez, and a walk to leftfielder Michael Ryan. Third baseman Brandon Larson then drew a walk to force in Ayala and then designated hitter Vito Chiaravalloti lined a one out two run single to center that plated Alvarez and Ryan. Rightfielder Matt Hagen followed by lining an RBI single to center that scored Larson and then Chiaravalloti would score on a Ducks throwing error on a fielder's choice.

The Patriots added a run in the top of the second inning to make it 6-0 when Ayala led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a one out RBI single to right by Ryan.

Somerset scored two more runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Catcher Travis Anderson reached with one out on a Ducks fielding error on a ground ball to short and second baseman David Housel followed with a double to left center. Ayala then lined a RBI single to center to score Anderson and Alvarez hit a RBI groundout to third that plated Housel.

The Patriots plated two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 10-0. Larson led off by crushing a solo home run off the scoreboard in left, his sixth of the 2008 season. First baseman Josh Pressley followed with a single to right, moved to second when Chiaravalloti drew a walk, and scored on a RBI single to center by Hagen .

Long Island scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Patriots lead to 10-4. Shortstop Donaldo Mendez led off with a single to left and then second baseman Brent Abernathy drew a one out walk. First baseman Pete Rose Jr. followed with a two run double to left center that scored Mendez and Abernathy and then leftfielder Ray Navarrete hit a two out RBI triple to deep center that plated Rose Jr. Rightfielder Estee Harris then hit a RBI single to left that scored Navarrete.

Somerset plated an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 11-4 when Alvarez led off by slugging a solo home run to left, his second of the year.

The Ducks plated a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 11-5 when third baseman Damian Rolls hit a one out solo home run to left, his fifth of the year.

Long Island scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it 11-6 when designated hitter Carl Everett hit a double to left center and came around to score when Navarrette followed with a RBI double down the right field line.

Patriots' starter Andy Van Hekken (1-1) picked up the win, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking four in six innings of work. Ducks' starter Mike Myers (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing ten runs, seven earned, on ten hits while walking three and striking out two in three plus innings pitched.

With the win the Patriots improved to 22-14 on 2008 season while the Ducks dropped to 18-19.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Thursday, June 5th when the Patriots return to Commerce Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game kicks off Commerce Bank Ballpark's 10th Anniversary Celebration with Ballpark Posters for the first 2,000 fans in attendance, courtesy of Barefoot Wine.
