Somerset Takes Down Stormers, Forges Three-way Tie
August 20, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Somerset Patriots made life in the Freedom Division even more interesting on Friday evening.
Somerset scored five times in the top of the third inning en route to a 9-2 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers in front of 6,518 at Clipper Magazine Stadium. With York losing, 6-5, to Bridgeport, the Patriots, Barnstormers and Revolution all stand in a virtual three-way tie with all three clubs now two games under .500 in the second half.
Jose Sanchez (4-11) found only minor trouble in the first inning and squirmed out of a bases-loaded jam in the second. He could not escape the third without major damage.
Joe Burke led off the inning with a single poked into left and stole second. Sanchez got Jeff Nettles to ground to shortstop for the first out. Josh Pressley walked, and Matt Hagen stung a double into right center to tie the game at 1-1. Noah Hall hit a short pop fly to right that fell in front of Reggie Taylor then spun past the right fielder as a second run crossed the plate. Jason Belcher picked up the second walk of the inning, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Iggy Suarez put both across with a double over the head of Michael Woods in left for a 5-1 cushion.
Homers by Elliott Ayala and Burke in the sixth opened the gap even wider.
That was more than enough for Josh Miller (10-8). The Somerset ace yielded a triple to Lloyd Turner to lead off the game. Turner scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam Witter, the first of 10 straight outs recorded by the right-hander. The Barnstormers did not get another runner into scoring position until the seventh when Aaron Herr and Brett Flowers put together consecutive singles to start the inning. A line drive double play dashed the hopes of a comeback.
Lancaster's frustration boiled over in the fourth inning. Taylor looked at a called third strike, the second in a row taken by a Barnstormers batter and barked back at the plate umpire, leading to his ejection from the game. He was the third Barnstormer to get tossed in the last four days.
Ben Fritz (3-6), the league leader in ERA and strikeouts, will start for Lancaster at 6:30 on Saturday. He will be opposed by right-hander Jason Monti (3-6). Fireworks will follow the contest. Fans entering the gates early will receive James Buchanan bobbleheads while supplies last.
