Newark Bears News Release
Central Islip, N.Y. - The Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 2-1 in extra innings at Suffolk County Sports Park in Central Islip, New York.
Bob Zimmermann and Randy Keisler locked up for an exciting pitcher's duel early. The Bears' hurler scattered five hits and struck out seven batters over six and two-third innings, while stranding six base runners. Keisler worked a perfect first frame and left the bases loaded with Bears in the second inning.
Newark cracked the scoreboard without the use of a hit in the visitor's third. Tim Raines Jr. led off with a walk and moved to second on a Kennard Jones sacrifice bunt. With Brian Barton at the plate, Raines Jr. broke for third. Keisler was called for a balk as he moved to third and as he threw the ball, Raines came in to score on the error and it was 1-0.
The score remained the same as Newark turned a double play to end the fifth and Zimmermann worked a perfect sixth with a pair of strikeouts. In the seventh, Matt Cavagnaro drew a two-out walk and knocked Zimmermann from the game followed by a Joey Gathright walk off reliever Michael Nix. Ray Navarrete, who finished the game 3-for-4, ripped a single through the left side to plate Cavagnaro and the game was tied at 1.
Long Island threatened in the eighth and ninth, but Newark converted a pair of double plays to close out the frames for Nix. Chris Spurling also kept the Bears at bay as he surrendered just one hit over his two scoreless innings in relief. The Bears took the lead back as Brian Barton put a one-out single up the middle off Ivan Maldanado in the visitor's tenth. Daryle Ward came off the bench in the designated hitter's spot, a drilled a two-out double down the first base line past a diving Matt Padgett to bring in Barton and make a 2-1 game. The Ducks put a pair in scoring position in the home half inning, but Armando Benitez got Johnny Hernandez to fly out to end it.
Nix (3-2) earned the victory, tossing two and one-third scoreless innings, allowing for hits, with a strikeout. Benitez earned his ninth save as he gave up a hit, a walk and struck out a batter in the tenth. Maldanado (1-4) took the loss surrendering two hits and the winning run in one inning of work.
