August 20, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
The Blue Crabs scored in all but three innings, and cruised to a 12-1 victory over the Camden Riversharks Friday night before a crowd of 5,289 at Regency Furniture Stadium. RHP Joe Newby (6-3) allowed just three hits in six innings of work and earned the win, while Camden righthander Derell McCall lasted just four innings and fell to 7-6 on the year. The Crabs offense got to McCall early and didn't relent until the seventh. Southern Maryland took the lead in the second when rightfielder Ben Harrison scored on errors by second baseman Teuris Olivares and leftfielder Garrett Guzman. Leftfielder Shaun Cumberland then knocked an RBI ground rule double into right, driving in catcher Christian Lopez who had reached base on Olivares's miscue. Ahead 3-0 in the fourth, second baseman Casey Benjamin tripled and scored on shortstop Travis Garcia's two-run homer to left, his 15th of the season. The Riversharks scored their lone run the next inning, as third baseman Chris Malec drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI ground out by designated hitter Sean Smith. Camden turned to their bullpen and LHP Josh Brey in the bottom of the fifth, but the Blue Crabs roughed him up as they batted around and scored four runs on just three hits. Centerfielder Jeremy Owens led off with a triple and came home on designated hitter Jamar Hill's sac fly. Benjamin also had a bases loaded RBI sac fly four batters later, driving in Harrison. Lopez then scored on a wild pitch by Brey, and first baseman Eric Crozier drove in Cumberland with an RBI single. Cumberland scored again in the sixth when he blasted a three run homer into deep rightfield. His 10th dinger of the season also brought Owens and Lopez home. On the mound, lefty Jeff Ridgway, and RHP's Ryan Speier and Steve Palazzolo combined for three scoreless innings of relief for the Blue Crabs. At 68-41, the first place Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 27-12 in the second half. The Blue Crabs will be back in action Saturday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, in game two of this three-game series against the Camden Riversharks, continuing a seven-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
