Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Somerset Patriots won Thursday night's game over the Lancaster Barnstormers with a three-hit, two-run attack in the ninth.
However, the Barnstormers may have lost the game in the eighth.
Somerset came from a 4-2 deficit to defeat the Barnstormers, 5-4, in the opener of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With David Vidal at first and nobody out in the eighth inning, Scott Cousins hit a bouncer to shortstop Lance Zawadzki. His throw to second missed Luke Hughes and rolled into foul territory down the right field line. Vidal rolled into third, and, as Cousins raced for second, first baseman Kevin Rivers made a throw that ended up in left field, allowing Vidal to score and Cousins to carry the tying run to third.
That run never scored as Zach Jackson did a monumental job getting out of the inning on two ground balls and a strikeout to preserve the lead.
However, instead of a two-run lead and facing the bottom of the order in the ninth, the lead was down to one with the 9-1-2 hitters up.
Somerset took full advantage. Scott Kelly laced a single into right center off Scott Patterson (0-1) and moved up on Jonny Tucker's bunt. James Skelton ripped a double into the right field corner to tie the game. After Thomas Neal lined to Brandon Jones in left, Vidal singled up the middle for the third time in the game to break the tie.
Jon Hunton retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to record his ninth save.
Luke Hughes and Brian Cavazos-Galvez each singled home a run in the third to stake Lancaster to a 2-1 lead, and Rivers launched a two-run homer in the next frame for a 4-1 cushion.
Mat Gamel slugged a leadoff homer in the fifth to trim the lead to 4-2.
Kyler Newby (5-2) pitched a perfect eighth to earn the win for the Patriots.
The two clubs meet again on Friday night with fireworks to follow the game. Lefty Dan Osterbrock (3-2) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander Randy Boone (1-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Hughes has hit safely in all four games with the Barnstormers...He has driven home Lancaster's first run in three straight...The runs off Patterson were the first he has allowed since May 15...Jackson recorded at least one strikeout for the 13th straight appearance...Rivers has two homers and five RBI in the last three games...Shunsuke Watanabe had his scoreless innings streak snapped at 23.0 with Kelly scored on a sacrifice fly by Skelton in the third...Anderson Feliz is 5-for-9 in his three home games.
