Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas. - The Sugar Land Skeeters picked up their sixth-straight victory as they squashed the York Revolution, 5-1, in front of 4,815 of the undead at Constellation Field on Zombie Night. The win moves the Skeeters back above the .500-plateau at 24-23 while York drops to 18-28. Sugar Land was last above .500 on May 8, just 15 games into the season.
Sugar Land starter Sean Gallagher worked his way into trouble in the top of the second. Shannon Wilkerson singled into center to open the frame and Wade Boggs and Nick Ferdinand followed with back-to-back walks to load the bases. Following an infield popup, Sean Smith reached on a bloop single into right field, falling just between second baseman Delwyn Young and rightfielder Kevin Russo, bringing a run in. When called upon, Gallagher necessitated a pair of big strikeouts to escape the jam with just the one run allowed.
Much like the night before, the Skeeters offense responded to an early run by the opposition with offense of their own. Jeremy Barfield singled through the left-side and Russo singled into right to put runners on the corners for Sugar Land with no outs. Chris Wallace lifted a flyball to center, deep enough for Barfield to tag and score on the sacrifice fly to tie the game at one. With two outs, Patrick Palmeiro singled into right and Amadeo Zazueta singled up the middle, bringing in Russo and giving the Skeeters their first lead of the night.
Sugar Land tacked on an additional run in the fifth after aggressive base running from Willy Taveras. The outfielder singled up the middle to open the frame before Travis Scott also poked a ball up the middle, allowing Taveras to utilize his speed and go first-to-third. Delwyn Young followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing in the speedster and giving the Skeeters a 3-1 lead.
After getting roughed up in his last three starts, Gallagher turned in his fifth quality start of the season, going 6.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out a pair. The right-hander retired 14-straight before exiting the game with a 3-1 lead in the seventh.
The Skeeters added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Barfield drew a one-out walk and Russo followed with his third hit of the night and the first extra-base hit for Sugar Land with a double down the left field line. With two in scoring position, Wallace blasted a double into the left-center alley for his second and third RBI of the evening, staking the Skeeters to a 5-1 lead.
John Lujan retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to clinch the sixth-straight victory for Sugar Land.
