Akron RubberDucks News Release
(New Britain, Conn.) New Britain Rock Cats second baseman Tony Thomas slugged a solo homer in the seventh inning Thursday night, giving the Rock Cats just enough offense to secure a 1-0 shutout over the Akron RubberDucks at New Britain Stadium.
Thomas' homer, his fifth of the season, came off Akron righthander Adam Miller (0-2) with one out in the seventh inning and snapped a scoreless tie. Thomas finished 1-3 on the night.
The win prevented an Akron sweep of the three-game series. The RubberDucks (37-22) took two of three against the Twins Double-A affiliate.
New Britain starter Sean Gilmartin (6-3) twirled 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball to pick up the win. He worked around a pair of first-and-third situations in the third and fourth innings to keep the RubberDucks off the scoreboard. After allowing a one- out single and stolen base by Jordan Smith in the eighth, he turned things over to Ryan O'Rourke, who recorded two straight strikeouts to end the threat. Hudson native Cole Johnson worked a perfect ninth to notch his fourth save and complete the whitewash.
It was just the third shutout loss in 59 games for the RubberDucks this season.
Akron starter Cody Anderson was brilliant in a no-decision. He tossed six shutout innings, limiting the Cats to three hits.
Anderson walked one and struck out five. He lowered his ERA to 3.96.
Ronny Rodriguez was 1-3, and extended his hitting streak to eight games. Tyler Naquin was 1-4, and has now hit in seven straight games.
The RubberDucks will move on to Harrisburg, Pa., and open a three-game series against the Senators on Friday night at 7:00. RHP Toru Murata (3-1, 1.95) is scheduled to start for the RubberDucks, while RHP Brad Meyers (1-3, 7.32) is the announced starter for Harrisburg. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
