Thursday, June 5, 2014 - Game #58 - Road Game #28
Peoples Natural Gas Field - Altoona, PA - 7:00 PM
LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets stranded the potential tying run on second base and watched their ninth-inning rally fall a run short in a 6-5 loss to the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Altoona erased Binghamton's early two-run lead with a run in the second and four in the fifth off Hansel Robles. Alen Hanson pushed the Curve ahead with a two-run triple in the big inning. The B-Mets fought back with two in the seventh off Emmanuel de Leon and one more in the ninth against Quinton Miller. Joely Rodriguez went six innings to pick up his third win. Robles lasted 4.2 innings in the loss.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Angel Cuan takes the mound for the fourth time and faces the Curve for the first time this season. The southpaw from Panama took the loss in his last start against the Rock Cats on Friday, May 30. He allowed four runs on five hits and struck out a season-best five over six innings. Cuan signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mets in September 2007.
ALTOONA STARTER: RHP Adrian Sampson makes his team-leading twelfth start of the season and second against the B-Mets. He took a no-decision in his last start against the Fisher Cats on Friday, May 30, despite tossing eight shutout innings. He struck out five and issued no walks in a game the Curve lost 1-0 in 12 innings. Sampson has gone winless in his last seven starts in spite of posting 2.43 ERA during the stretch. Selected by the Pirates out of Bellevue Community College (WA) in the 5th round of the 2012 draft, he spent last year with Bradenton (High-A).
LAWLEY STREAKING: B-Mets infielder/outfielder Dustin Lawley extended his current hitting streak to a season-best eight games with an RBI double on Wednesday night. The stretch includes a week-long stint on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. The Alabama native has hit .333 (11-for-33) during the streak with four doubles and raised his batting average by 29 percentage points.
REYNOLDS ROLLING: B-Mets shortstop Matt Reynolds has emphatically returned to the lineup after spending five games on the shelf. He has gone 7-for-11 in his two games back, raising his average to .365, the highest it's been since late April. Wednesday's game marked his third four-hit game of the season.
COVERING THE LEADERBOARD: The B-Mets have a league-high three players ranked in the top ten in Eastern League batting average. Matt Reynolds, the owner of a .365 average, holds the best mark in all of Double-A. Matt Clark (.331) ranks fifth in the league, followed closely by Kevin Plawecki (.327) in sixth.
BEASTS IN THE BULLPEN: Excluding Tyler Pill's relief appearance last Wednesday, the B-Mets bullpen has compiled a 2.17 ERA in the last 26 games. During that span, they've struck out 86 and walked only 24 over 78.2 innings. Binghamton's bullpen ERA for the season is down to 3.03.
BRADFORD BACK ON TRACK: After compiling a 3.77 ERA and allowing an opponent batting average of .311 through his first 12 games, B-Mets closer Chasen Bradford has righted the ship. He's posted nine straight scoreless appearances, while going perfect in his last eight save chances. Opponents have hit .179 during the scoreless stretch.
NUMBERS ON THEIR SIDE: The B-Mets have gone 4-0 in rubber matches this season and 12-4 in series finales. A victory tonight would secure their 10th series win of the season and fourth on the road. Binghamton has gone 6-2 on Thursdays this season.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets return home to open their third straight weekend series against the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Matt Bowman faces RHP Virgil Vasquez.
